Undergraduates hold major share in Chinese haircare market: Report

The haricare market in China appeared proportionate to the education level of the consumers, with undergraduate degree holders forming more than half of the market, finds a report by Canadean – Health & Beauty.

According to the report, "Haircare Market in China, 2011", the share grew from 3% at pre-primary level to 54.5% at undergraduate, but fell to 5.6% at the postgraduate consumer level.

Among the various age groups, pre-mid-lifers aged 35-44 led with 22.6%, followed by older consumers of above 55 years at 19%; tweens & early teens aged 10 to 15 came at the end with 7%.

Female consumers had a marginal lead of 2% over males; the urban consumers clearly dominated the market with 97%.

Changing age structures and quality have been the two most influencing trends among consumers with 40% and 33% respectively.

The affluent income group with 29% and the moderate income section with 28% have been the major contributors to the market.

Individuals having more than seven hours of leisure time held the highest share of 36%, while those having one to three hours time held the least at 14%.

On an average, 88% of the Chinese haircare market is dominated by brands as against private labels.

Among the various categories, shampoos held a major stake with 40%, followed by styling agents at 27%, hair colorants 12%, perms & relaxers 11% and conditioners 10%.
