Undergraduates drive American suncare market, says report

Undergraduates seem to be more concerned about protecting themselves from the scorching heat of the sun when compared with other age groups in the US, finds a new survey by UK-based research firm Canadean – Health & Beauty.

According to the report ‘Consumer Trends in the Suncare Market in the US, 2011’, close to 30% market value is retained by undergraduates of the country, followed only by upper secondary group at 18.7%.

Among segments, sun protection led the industry in 2011 with a significant 65% share in market value, followed by self-tan segment at 25% and after-sun at 11%.

The dominance of suncare segment in the US continued even in volume terms where it held 63% share, followed by self-tan at 28.3% and after-sun at 8.5%.

Older Americans stood on top of the chart holding close to 20% market share while kids & babies, early young adults and older young adults share little more than 16.5%.

Coming to wealth groups, affluent category held the majority of the share with up to 31%, followed by the better off Americans at 22.4% among various others.

Time rich individuals in the US have shown increased fondness for sun protection, by touching 37.3%, interestingly followed by time poor consumers at 23.3%.

The penetration of private label suncare brands in the US has been moderate in self-tan and sun protection segments, while after-sun could manage a better penetration of close to 11%.

Nearly 30% consumers have stated better value for money as the major trend that influenced their consumption of suncare products. Challenging lifestages and changing age structures are the remaining two trends that drove American suncare market.
