UK sun care market takes a beating

Poor weather conditions prevalent in the UK and the reduced number of Brits planning to travel abroad, owing to dull economic conditions, has hit the sun care market in UK hard, according to a new report.

The report released by Companies & Markets, says the UK sun care market reached a total market value of £291m (€373m) in 2011, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1% over 2010.

The segments of aftersun, self-tanning and sun protection registered a CAGR of 1% each during the same period, reported cosmeticdesign-europe.com.

While the total sun care volume saw a 2% fall, self-tanning registered a growth in volume by 3%, as consumers chose self-tanning products over sun bathing.

According to the report, it is estimated that the UK sun care market will witness a negative growth of about 0.4% CAGR through to 2016.

Even though sun care market growth is set to gain and the range of premium sun care will increase, in volume terms the growth is not expected to be substantial.

Negative growth is forecasted due to continuation of poor summer across the sun care market, which is making companies undertake research for releasing sun care products with value-adds.

On the other hand, L’Oréal (UK) continued to hold its sway over the UK sun care market, with around a 25% market share value.

Garnier Ambre Solaire was the largest brand in the UK in 2011, as it garnered 23% of overall category value.
