The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends seal to identify tested sunscreen

US-based international organisation for the prevention, detection, and treatment of skin cancer, The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF), has announced that sunscreens with its seal of recommendation are an easy way for users know the product has been rigorously tested and is effective on use.

SCF in a statement said The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation is a desired seal, and to earn it, a sunscreen is rigorously tested and approved after processes that are above and beyond FDA testing.

To earn the approval and seal from SCF, a company must provide scientific data that shows its products will prevent sun-induced damage to the skin.

The company is also required to demonstrate that the sunscreen protects against ultra violet B (UVB) rays with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher has proper UVA protection, and does not cause irritation or an allergic reaction on 20 test subjects.

A committee of photobiologists, experts in studying the effect of ultraviolent radiation on the skin, then review the information collected from the test subjects to see if the product qualifies for the seal.

SCF suggests that for a product to get the seal as an ‘Active’ sunscreen, it must also be water resistant.

Extended and unprotected sun exposure could result in premature skin aging, wrinkles and discolouration and increases the risk of skin cancer.
