Sony develops new skin analysing technology for beauty industry

Electronic products manufacturer Sony has developed Smart Skin Evaluation Program (SSKEP), a skin analysing technology for studying various elements of the skin such as texture, blemishes, pores, brightness and colouring.

SSKEP is the firm’s own skin analysing technology, which includes back-illuminated CMOS image sensors that achieve high sensitivity and low noise, multiple wavelength light source controls, and skin-analysing algorithms.

According to the Japanese firm, the combination of advanced sensing technologies and high-speed image processing technologies will facilitate the quantitative and multilateral measuring and examine various elements of the skin.

The firm said currently although there are many skin analysing products available in the beauty industry for professional and consumer use, the professional products are large and expensive, while consumer products offer limited assessing capabilities.

Sony said the manufacturers can commercialise compact products that can easily study various elements of the skin with the incorporation of the skin analysing technology, .

The technology while studying skin has the ability to examine both the surface layer of the skin, which is readily reachable with visible light, as well as the layers beneath the skin, which are accessible only with near-infrared light.

SSKEP controls both the output of multiple wavelength light sources as well as the image capturing process with the CMOS image sensor, to understand highly sensitive photography on and under the surface of the skin, thereby enabling diverse and accurate skin analysis.

In addition to this, SSKEP has also been incorporated with Sony’s own algorithms which enable quantitative evaluation, pixel-by-pixel analysis and visualisation of skin composition through image processing and shape recognition technologies.

Sony plans to market the technology into diverse range of applications in various new services and consumer-oriented products across the beauty industry and more.
