Silab introduces new anti-wrinkle ingredient alternative to hyaluronic acid

Cosmetic ingredients manufacturer Silab has launched Prohyal+, a new alternative to hyaluronic acid, a common ingredient used in anti-wrinkle product formulations.

Extracted from Mexican blue agave leaves, the firm said that the new ingredient will be marketed as a next generation hyaluronic acid ingredient, targeting high anti-wrinkle results, reported website cosmeticsdesign.com.

The firm said in order to calculate the efficacy of the ingredient on fine lines and wrinkles, its R&D team conducted in vitro and in vivo studies on volunteers skin with twice daily applications.

The study has found that the ingredient aims at the endogenous synthesis of hyaluronic acid, which has power to diffuse into both the skin tissue and skin cells.

According to the firm, the ingredient in study has increased expression of hyaluronan synthase (HAS2) synthesis enzyme, which further activates the natural mechanism of hyaluronic acid production, a natural process in skin cells that decreases with age.

When used for 28 days, t it was observed that the ingredient visibly smoothed skin around the crow’s feet, showing measureable parameter Sq and Parameter Sa results that were reduced by 6.3% and 7.1% respectively.

The study has shown that the ingredient in a 2% dose can increase the expression of HAS2 by 651%, besides encouraging the synthesis of hyaluronic acid by 237%.

In order to understand the effect on both levels of HAS2 hyaluronan synthase and the synthesis of hyaluronic acid, the study used a control ingredient combined with Prohyal+ in several doses ranging from 0.5, 1 and 2%.

Silab said it found that the new ingredient had properties similar to hyaluronic acid, and reduced the wrinkles volume by an average of 14.2% in 70% of the volunteers it was tested on.
