Nencki Institute and Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory team up to develop new anti-ageing products

Poland-based The Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology has teamed up with Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory to develop new anti-ageing products by using the results based on results of mitochondria research.

According to the consortium, the cosmetics will be developed under a research-industry consortium, yielded by applying the research results on mitochondria bioenergetics and biochemistry, reported cosmeticsdesign.com.

Mitochondria are said to be responsible for vital functions in daily life, as they produce the adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a chemical compound which is instrumental in transporting chemical energy within cells.

The scientists said in research phase of new cosmetics it is vital that the mitochondria also play an important role in apoptosis, which is the programmed cell death.

Using compounds specifically affecting the mitochondria, suppression of apoptosis contribute to prolonging cells’ youth to a significant degree along with the tissue formed from the cells, for example the skin, the scientists said.

Nencki Institute director Adam Szewczyk said: "We hope to combine the research results of Nencki scientific groups and the experience of Dr Irena Eris Cosmetic Laboratory to develop in a few years innovative and really effective cosmetics with scientifically proven effects."

According to the scientists, the aim of the research is to identify and evaluate compounds, whose interaction with the mitochondria favourably impacts skin cells and delays damage caused by the oxidative stress.

The project is being run through funding obtained from the Applied Research Program executed by the National Centre for Research and Development.
