Nail care market growth picks up in US

The mass nail care market has grown exponentially, overshadowing the staid growth rates seen in other cosmetics categories, according to Packaged Facts’ new report on ‘The Nail Care Market in the US.’

Citing the SymphonyIRI data, in the Packaged Facts report said mass-market sales of nail care products rose by 26% for the year ending April 15, 2012.

According to the report, various factors are said to be driving the market and adds that a nailcentric fashion culture has evolved converting women’s nails into style statements.

As a glut of innovative nail care products flood the market, women have been provided the opportunity to affordably mimic nail salon effects in their own homes, which in turn has led to a growing number of women making frequent use of DIY nail care products.

The nail salon services market fell by nearly 5% in 2009 and was below its 2008 level in 2010, but all signs indicate to a return to popularity of nail salon services, according to the Nails Magazine 2011-2012 ‘Big Book.’

The Experian Simmons data cited in the Packaged Facts report said the improving economic climate has caused increasing number of women availing frequent professional nail care services.

The number of women having two or more manicures in a six-month period, defined as ‘salonistas’ by Packaged Facts, increased from 16.3 million in 2010 to 18.1 million in 2011.

The question bugging the nail care product marketers is, however, whether DIY nail care sales will fall as women opt for salons to get professional manicures and pedicures.

Packaged Facts publisher David Sprinkle, commenting on this issue, said, "The data strongly suggest that the reverse will be true."
The report concluded by saying that as the number of women visiting salons for manicures increases, the number of women buying and using DIY nail care products will also increase resultantly.
