Garnier along with TerraCycle to create community garden from beauty waste in US

The company will create the garden with the help of TerraCycle, and GrowNYC.

TerraCycle company based in US specializes in the reuse of non-recyclable post-consumer waste and GrowNYC is a non-profit organisation concerned with improving the city’s environment.

The initiative is a part of Garnier’s long-term goal to find greener, more sustainable solutions for beauty care products.

L’Oreal USA several employees, on June 14, will participate in a major restoration project of a local New York community garden which was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Upon completion of the restoration project the garden will be handed over to Union Settlement community members and GrowNYC to grow and maintain food, flowers, and herbs in garden beds made out of recycled beauty materials.

The garden is expected to produce about 1,500 pounds of vegetables a year.

Maybelline New York-Garnier-Essie president David Greenberg said, "Our commitment to sustainability isn’t just about keeping packaging waste from personal care and cosmetics products out of landfills, but it’s also about reusing that waste and providing a foundation for greener living."

TerraCycle recycled the beauty waste to create many of the plastic components that will be installed in the new garden.

The beauty waste was collected by Garnier’s Personal Care and Beauty Brigade Program, a free fundraising effort that pays for every piece of waste collected and returned to TerraCycle.

TerraCycle CEO Tom Szaky said the company is committed to support beautifying the planet and local communities.

"Not only does Garnier support schools and community organizations on an on-going basis through the Personal Care and Beauty Brigade, the garden will be a permanent testament to the impact recycling can have on a community and in our world."
