Exposure to fragrances could cause adverse effects on people: Study

A doctor at Kent and Canterbury hospital and BMI Chaucer Hospital has revealed that fragrance from air fresheners, scented candles and other perfumed products could have adverse effects on health of people who come into contact with them.

According to the report, perfumed products could affect people’s health, causing problems including allergies, asthma and migraine, and even interfere with their sexual desire, reported newspaper Daily Mail.

Kent & Canterbury hospital and BMI Chaucer Hospital consultant dermatologist Dr Susannah Baron said allergies are on the rise, and the amount of perfumed products is also swelling.

"Fragrance allergy can show up as contact dermatitis in the site a perfumed product is applied, or as a flare-up of existing eczema. It can be a real problem," Baron added.

The study has shown that molecules in the fragrances activate an immune response, causing itchiness and even scaly, cracked skin.

One in 20 persons is thought to be affected by fragrance allergy, and this number may be on the rise, according to the study.

The report quoted two surveys conducted by Anne Steinemann, professor of civil and environmental engineering and public affairs at the University of Washington, who found more than 30% of the public reporting adverse health effects from being exposed to scents in every day life.

In July 2012, following reports that certain perfumes triggered skin reaction, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety asked manufacturers of perfumes to list potential allergens in their products.

According to the newspaper, earlier in 2012, the US state of New Hampshire prohibited workers from wearing scents, so that they would not affect their co-workers.
