DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products partners with RML to develop bio-based solution for personal care products

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Company announced that it has partnered with RML to create a new range of alternative preservatives called PolyGuard, which features the proprietary ingredient Zemea propanediol.

RML is a provider of innovative preservative systems and other raw materials to the cosmetic and personal care industries.
Zemea is a natural, 100% bio-based ingredient made from corn sugar through fermentation, which is developed for use in the cosmetics and personal care market.

An environmentally friendly sustainable alternative to petroleum-based glycols and glycerin, the product benefits are lack of skin irritation and improved moisturisation.

Zemea, which is approved as a natural ingredient by Ecocert and the Natural Products Association, is certified 100% bio-based by the US Department of Agriculture and has both Kosher and Halal certifications.

RML designed its new preservative line PolyGuard, leveraging on the ability of Zemea to increase preservative efficiency along with its proven lack of irritation in cosmetic and personal care products in combination with the natural preservative, e-polylysine, which is derived through the fermentation of bacteria, said the company.

The PolyGuard line has two preservative blends, PolyGuard BA and PolyGuard CG.

PolyGuard BA combines Zemea with other ingredients of natural origin – e-polylysine and benzyl alcohol – allowing for natural preservation.

Drawing from RML’s experience in the marketplace, PolyGuard CG produces caprylyl glycol based preservative systems by combining Zemea, e-polylysine and RML’s domestically produced and exceptionally pure caprylyl glycol.

These materials are manufactured expressly for RML by Hampford Research.

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products account executive Pete Colombo said functional ingredients of natural origin that improve product performance are being increasingly sought after by the innovators in the cosmetic and personal care industry.

"We are pleased RML Incorporated chose to collaborate with DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products for the development of the PolyGuard preservative systems featuring Zemea® propanedio," said Colombo.

PolyGuard BA should be considered for preservation by formulators in their natural products, added the company.

PolyGuard BA provides preservation in a clear liquid with minimum odour allowing for use in a range of natural personal care materials.

Although not derived entirely from natural materials, PolyGuard CG provides formulators with a preservative that is an alternative to parabens and formaldehyde releasers using the long-standing effectiveness of caprylyl glycol based systems.
