Changing age structures behind Indian haircare industry, says report

Changing age structures was the key force driving the Indian haircare industry, finds a new research by Canadean Health & Beauty.

According to the report ‘Consumer Trends in the Haircare Market in India, 2011’, a significant 48% Indian consumers have stated that their overall consumption was influenced by changing age structures.

All the three segments of the industry, comprising conditioner, hair colorants, shampoo and styling agents, too were driven by the same trend in 2011.

In terms of market value, shampoo led the market with up to 34% share, followed by conditioners at 32% and hair colorants at 21%, while styling agents was trailing at the bottom with 13%.

Even in the volume terms, nearly similar sharing was noticed among all the segments – with shampoo leading the list with close to 34% followed by conditioner at over 32%, said Canadean.

Young adults were found to be more cautious about their haircare, as both early and older young adults together held 37% of the value share, with almost equal contribution from each group. Kids & babies group was also impressive at third position with nearly 17% share.

In terms of life-stages, the Indians who are single having no kids accounted for the leading share of 37% in the haircare market, followed by those in full-time education.

Postgraduates in the country stood atop in education-wise analysis with over 35% share in 2011, followed only by undergraduates at about 21%.

In 2011, affluent Indians captured the major share of more than 35% and were interestingly followed by those who were hard-pressed for money at close to 30%.

Similarly, both time poor and time rich individuals were among the top first and second positions with nearly 35% and 30% shares respectively.

In India, private label brands have still a long way to go. The branded products have dominated by restricting the private labels to less than 2% across all the segments.
