Bigelow Lab, University of Mississippi team up to develop marine based cosmetics

Under the new partnership, Bigelow Laboratory and the university’s School of Pharmacy and National Center for Natural Products Research, will jointly create cosmetics and other products using ocean plants and microorganisms, reported the news website bangordailynews.com.

Bigelow Laboratory executive director Graham Shimmield said the firm is eagerly waiting to work with university in creating products based on ocean research discoveries that will benefit society and industry.

According to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO), the worldwide pharmaceutical market, which is worth approximately $300bn annually, is expected to increase by another $100bn over the next three years.

Under the agreement, the partnership jointly announced that they will conduct variety of programs, workshops, symposiums and post-doctoral fellowships, besides the research and development of "innovative" commercial products.

Recently, Bigelow Laboratory has inaugurated a new 60,000ft² research and education center, funded in part by donations, grants and $4.5m in voter-approved bond money.

The firm recently initiated a live-in research and education program in partnership with Colby College.
