Shiseido joins SPICE for sustainable cosmetics packaging

Japanese personal care company Shiseido has joined the Sustainable Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics (SPICE) to establish a new framework for eco-friendly packages and containers.

SPICE is co-founded by L’Oréal and environmental sustainability consulting firm Quantis to guide sustainable packaging policies and drive packaging launches accordingly to understand the environmental performance of products.

As part of the initiative, Shiseido will contribute to the evaluation process of eco-friendly technologies offered by Japanese cosmetic companies and work to improve the sustainability of the industry.

Quantis France director Dimitri Caudrelier said: “We are honoured to co-found SPICE with the ambition to guide a large number of businesses and brands to do just that.

“Packaging is key for the cosmetics industry and companies need robust information and recognised frameworks to make resilient decisions. SPICE will be a key factor in driving their sustainability transformation.”

Cosmetics industry organisations such as product manufacturers and packaging suppliers are eligible to join the initiative as corporate members.

Other members that have joined SPICE include Avon Products, Chanel, Clarins Group, Coty, L’Occitane en Provence, LVMH, Sisley, Cosmetic Valley and Federation of Beauty Companies, France (FEBEA).

Guided by sustainability experts at Quantis, SPICE members will work collaboratively to develop and publish business-oriented methodologies and data that help companies in enhancing the environmental performance of the entire packaging value chain.
