X-Rite develops colour measurement app for cosmetics shopping

Technology firm X-Rite has developed new app Colour-Eye to enable precise colour matching in e-commerce for cosmetics shopping.

The new app comes with a colour calibration card that can be used to enable the search, match, and purchase of products in desired colours. Research by the firm indicates shoppers experience uncertainty and difficulty in colour communication. In response, the company aims to allow customers to match colours from a photo to a cosmetic item.

According to X-Rite, colour calibration tools and software are needed to overcome digital camera technology concerns such as lighting, glossiness, texture, angle of view. In addition to cosmetic applications, Colour-Eye can be integrated into shopping apps of home, fashion, and retail paint firms.

X-Rite strategy and product planning vice-president Chris Winczewski said: “With Colour-Eye, retailers will be able to help customers accurately match a paint colour to a favourite pillow or accent piece, simply by capturing the colour on a mobile device."

Colour-Eye features dual-illumination technology to capture two images for improved colour accuracy. This helps prevent incorrect colour matches.
