UK confirms ban of microbeads in cosmetics

The UK has confirmed a ban of the sale and manufacture of microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products.

The move is intended to address plastic waste in the country’s oceans.

Announced by environment secretary Michael Gove, this decision follows a consultation introduced last year that sought comments on the ban proposal.

A total of 431 responses have been received by the government from individuals and cosmetics firms, as well as associations, environmental charities, campaign groups, and academic institutions.

The majority of the respondents supported the ban. Others proposed additional products to be included, requested extra time for implementation, and reported other sources causing marine pollution.

Respondents also urged the government to ensure the ban is based on clear evidence, with restrictions placed only on products provides to contain plastics affecting the marine environment.

In response, the government said that the proposed ban will be implemented as quickly as possible and will be initially applicable to rinse-off cosmetics and personal care products that contain microbeads. It will not include leave-on products such as makeup and sunscreen.

In addition, the government will also work on new approaches to minimise the amount of plastic that enters the seas through other sources such as plastic bottles.
