L’Oréal reports positive outcome from study on skin-massaging device

L’Oréal has reported positive outcome from a study conducted to assess the effects of its new skin-massaging device.

The company scientists have designed the device following the evaluation of mechanobiology processes and measurement of the effects of mechanical stimuli on skin cells.

The study involved the combination of the firm's anti-ageing cream and the device in ex-vivo expression of human dermis proteins and in-vivo facial wrinkles.

Results from the study showed that the mechanical stimulus of the skin massage by the device is complementary to the cream in anti-ageing response and minimising facial wrinkles.

This study utilised the device to deliver an oscillating torque to produce cyclic strain at different frequencies.

The scientists maintained skin implants ex-vivo for ten days and massaged them twice a day for one minute at multiple frequencies ranging from 65Hz to 85Hz.

When compared to untreated skin explants, the massaging was found to have caused higher rates of expression of skin proteins such as decorin, fibrillin, tropoelastin and procollagen-1.

The expression was observed to depend on the stimulus frequency and the maximum expression occurred at 75Hz.

To test the mechanical stimulus in-vivo, commercial anti-ageing cream was used to face and neck along with daily treatments using the device in 20 Caucasian women for eight weeks.

The global facial wrinkles, skin texture, lip area, cheek wrinkles, neck sagging and neck texture were assessed at week 0, 4 and 8 using a clinical grading scale.

It was observed that the massaging device enhanced the beneficial effects of the cream.
