Kérastase and Withings unveil the world’s first smart hairbrush

Professional haircare firm Kérastase has unveiled the world's first smart hairbrush, Kérastase Hair Coach Powered by Withings at CES 2017.

In partnership with Withings, the hairbrush was designed in collaboration with the Research and Innovation Technology Incubator of haircare brand L'Oréal.

Equipped with advanced sensors and patent-pending signal analysis algorithms, the new brush scores the quality of hair and monitors the effects of care routines.

Kérastase Hair Coach is complemented by a mobile app, which offers additional information and customised product recommendations to aid better haircare. The new brush is claimed to reduce the risk of hair damage, breakage, and split ends.

The sensors include a microphone for the recognition of brushing patterns, which offers information on manageability, frizziness, dryness, split ends, and breakage. Force applied to the hair and scalp during brushing is measured by three-axis load cells, while the accelerometer and gyroscope further analyses brushing patterns and counts brush strokes. It also provides haptic feedback signalling in case of vigorous brushing.

The brush is also equipped with conductivity sensors, offering a precise hair measurement by establishing if the brush is being used on dry or wet hair. The data from these sensors is automatically fed to the mobile app through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

L'Oréal's incubator has managed all brush testing and designed the signal analysis algorithms that power the device, while Withings developed the hardware, mobile app.

Kérastase offered inputs on professional haircare in addition to digital and personalised content and recommendations in the app.

The new smart hairbrush will be available from the middle of this year at select Kérastase hair salons and its website, as well as via Withings' online sales and distribution channels.
