Jala Group prints Asian skin using 3D bioprinting

China-based cosmetics company Jala Group has printed Asian skin using a three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology.

The firm has formed a special research and development (R&D) team comprising scientists from China and France across the engineering, biomaterial, cell biology, pharmaceutical, and regenerative medicine streams. The skin model was built by this team after 98 experiments.

France-based Bearskin Creations provided the advanced and diversified 3D skin models required to carry out the project. These models were combined with Jala's analysis and detection methods to obtain a range of customised solutions for the evaluation of chemicals and materials.

Lab Skin Creations' developed and obtained a patent for the technology bioink, which allows for the reconstruction of skin tissues in vitro by utilising 3D bioprinting.

The firm printed the skin from Asian skin cells to aid them in developing cosmetics, as there are several differences between Asian and Caucasian skin in terms of structure and texture due to diet, environment, air pollution, and exposure to the sun.

Jala intends to use the 3D skin as an in vitro organism for the functional testing of raw materials, evaluation of cosmetics, and drug development efficacy, as well as for mechanism research in biotechnology development.
