Evonik develops new substitute for microplastics in cosmetics

Germany-based specialty chemicals maker Evonik has developed new functional additive Sipernat 11 PC that can be used as a substitute for microplastics in cosmetics formulation.

This functional additive is used in the preparation of cosmetics to improve their appearance and sensory properties. Developed as EXP 9590, Sipernat 11 PC can be utilised as a substitute for microplastics in products such as personal care and toning creams, foundations, make-up, and face powder.

The new additive is claimed to improve the sensory properties, acting as an optical blurring agent, mattifying the skin's surface, and minimising visible wrinkles.

Polymer materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene can be replaced by the specialty silica Sipernat. Sipernat 11 PC expands the firm's Sipernat 22 PC and Sipernat 2200 PC, which were developed for use in shower gels and skin peels.

All three of the products are said to have been listed by the International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association (NATRUE) as Nature Identical. The products have also received Ecocert certification, which allows use in natural cosmetic products.

The functional additives are currently produced in Europe, with plans for expansion to Asia and North America. They are claimed to undergo uniform specifications and microbiological checks to ensure that every customer is supplied reliably and with consistent quality.

In 2015, Evonik has reported sales of around €13.5bn and an operating profit (adjusted EBITDA) of approximately €2.47bn.
