Albéa selects DuPont’s Surlyn for new L’Occitane perfume packaging

Cosmetic packaging solutions provider Albéa has selected DuPont Performance Materials’ (DPM) Surlyn to develop a cap for personal care products firm L’Occitane’s new perfume, Terre de Lumière.

DuPont Surlyn is an ionomer resin designed for a variety of applications such as cosmetic, food, medical device and stretch packaging.

With processing options of blown film, cast film, sheet, extrusion coating and injection moulding, Surlyn comes in various grades to optimise material usage.

Surlyn is said to provide clarity, formability and scratch resistance for cosmetics packaging. Its transparency and natural brilliance allowed Albéa to make the cap in a way to reflect the colour of the perfume inside the bottle.

Albéa development manager Laurent Pesqueux said: "Surlyn is an endless source of inspirational ideas, while meeting all the technical requirements of this particular project.

"Its exceptional transparency and brilliance and its ability to reproduce any shape made it possible to create a cap that is round, like a pebble.

"In addition, Surlyn provides an excellent surface finish, with invisible parting lines."

The Terre de Lumière fragrance by L’Occitane features both fresh and warm notes, comprising amber, pink pepper, honey, lavender, almond, acacia and tonka bean.

Packed in a light-infused bottle with red-orange cap, the Eau de Parfum is said to be a blend of rich and sweet fragrances.

L’Occitane Technical Packaging Development director David Bayard said: "We are very satisfied with the aesthetic properties offered by Surlyn. The brilliance of the cap creates the desired visual impact."
