Malaysia finds three cosmetic products with toxic components

Malaysia has urged the public to stop using three cosmetic products after they were found to contain toxic components.

The three products are Sifu Kunyit Day Cream, Sifu Kunyit Night Cream and JJ Skincare Glowhite Night Cream, state news agency Bernama reported quoting health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The government has also revoked the products’ notifications and prohibited further sales. Violations of the government order will invite fines, imprisonment or both.

The three cosmetics products were said to contain hydroquinone, tretinoin, betamethasone valerate and mercury.

Betamethasone valerate can trigger irritations, acne and changes in skin pigmentation when used, while Hydroquinone causes skin redness, discomfort and reduces skin protection against harmful UV rays among others.

The use of tretinoin can be painful, while mercury can damage kidneys and nervous system when absorbed by the body. Mercury is also found to cause rashes on the skin.

In a statement, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said: “Products containing hydroquinone, tretinoin and betamethasone valerate are drugs that need to be registered with the Drug Control Authority and can only be used with the advice of a health professional.

“The use of products containing these substances without the supervision of health professionals can cause unwanted side effects.

He also noted that customers who have used the products may seek advice from a health professional, if they have experienced any discomfort.
