IPN students develop mushroom-based anti-ageing cosmetics in Mexico

Students at Mexico’s National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) have developed a line of anti-ageing cosmetics that contain mushroom as a key ingredient.

It is claimed that the mushrooms provide natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties. The Agaricus and Plerotus mushrooms are rich in minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, iron, copper, magnesium and zinc; vitamins B1, B2, C and D; and a protein named chitin, which is known for its healing properties.

Team leader Nestor Naranjo claimed that the lotions made from these mushrooms help combat skin diseases by providing moisture to the skin besides cleansing it, reported Efe.

Shampoos made from mushroom are claimed to strengthen, nurture and hydrate hair to provide it healthy and shiny look.

The products produced by the team include a mild anti-blotches cream that is said to be suitable for all skin types for use in the day or overnight.

Naranjo was quoted by Efe as saying: “We decided to produce cosmetics such skin creams, variations for the body and the face, and shampoos and hair rinses. As a research center, we will offer the micro-biological testing to certify the safety of the products.”

Naranjo said that team aims for commercial launch of the products.
