Is L’Oreal personalised make-up and skincare prototype worth it?

L’Oreal has revealed its personalised beauty prototype called Perso at the CES; this innovative beauty gadget will mix foundation, lipstick and a skincare regime personalised and bespoke to its owner.

Clever stuff? Well yes, but this is still just a prototype, and will not be available to the market until 2021.

So how will it work? According to L’Oreal, the lipstick and foundation version is accompanied by an app that is loaded with numerous images to choose from, and the final version is expected to easily connect the user’s social media account and the user would be able to choose an image of their favourite influencer.

The app also allows you to preview the colour in an augmented reality, showing what it would look like on your face. The device is said to squirt around only 30 portions of desired lipstick or foundation, which is a lot less than your normal lippy.

A novel and clever idea, one that should work, however, it is a concept that could end up creating less personalisation and individualism, as everyone would end up looking the same.

Also, although it’s certainly an innovative product, the Perso looks as if it would be inconvenient to take on a night out, and this could be an issue for the user, especially if they need a like-for-like top-up mid-evening.

The skincare version is sold as a different kettle of fish; this will take into account many different aspects of the users’ needs, and the app will scan your face to understand what is needed at that point, using its magic to knock you back into shape.

However, there is a slight worry that this technology will be costly, clunky and potentially gimmicky. Personalised goods are definitely a thing, and the concept is good, but it is not particularly portable (not for a clutch bag), looks like it might cost a bit (remember only 30 or so applications) and, more so than anything, consumers tend to like what they know.

Another worry is the movement towards non-chemical, natural make up that is sustainable in every way. There is not much information on how the little capsules will be packaged, but if this doesn’t align to green values, it could turn people off.

This is one of those great ideas that could be a massive hit, or a massive miss, L’Oreal has a year or so to make sure it is not the latter.
