Ranbaxy to launch Absorica to treat recalcitrant nodular acne

India-based Ranbaxy Laboratories’ (RLL) wholly owned subsidiary Ranbaxy Laboratories (RLI), said that it has received approval for Absorica (CIP-ISOTRETINOIN NDA), a novel patented acne medication isotretinoin formulation to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne.

According to the company, the new product developed by Canada-based Cipher Pharmaceuticals and partner Galephar Pharmaceutical Research will be launched in the US in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Ranbaxy will pay Cipher $9m milestone, of which $4.5m will be shared with Galephar, apart from royalties on net sales, as per the agreement.

Ranbaxy Americas senior vice president and regional director Venkat Krishnan said that the company will make Absorica available to dermatologists and patients for the treatment for severe recalcitrant nodular acne.

"Absorica is a critical milestone in our commitment to serve the dermatology community and will be the flagship brand for Ranbaxy’s specialized dermatology sales force," said Krishnan.

Cipher said that it would work closely with Ranbaxy Laboratories in preparation for the US launch of the product.
