New technology aims to extend scent life in perfume and cosmetic products

The NANOTEC NanoMolecular Sensor Laboratory in Thailand has developed a new slow release technology for the fragrance dispersing that could be adapted for perfume and cosmetic applications.

The researchers at the laboratory conducted a study on potpourri molecules that are used in scented household products and revealed a new method to develop coating and encapsulating techniques for fragrance molecules to increase the fragrance life.

According to the researchers, the fragrance from the potpourri generally endures for only one month in a 30 degree celsius environment, but the slow release technology has shown that it could double the span.

The researchers explained that in the tests the control of the extension and release of the potpourri scent was scientifically calculated using Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) thermogram technique under 50 degrees celsius for up to 3 hours, which has shown the incremental property.

NANOTEC said it could be of great benefit in perfume or cosmetic applications, when it comes to exporting the aromatic products abroad as the process can extend aromatic fragrance.

NanoMolecular Sensor Lab head Gamolwan Tumcharern said the ability to encapsulate and coat helps to keep the molecule intact and extend the aromatic fragrance for an additional time.

The researchers said by using the nanotechnology for extending the life of a specific export product, local healthcare and beautification exporting firms can use technology as a marketing tool to increase product value and expand global markets in Japan, Europe and North America.
