Denmark government promotes greener cosmetic chemical alternatives

According to the ministry, cosmetic products produced and sold in the EU should be safe to use and should adhere to the Cosmetics Directive.

The ministry has laid special emphasis on preservatives and ingredients used in the personal care products as it felt that many of the existing and approved preservatives could also cause not just allergies but also have endocrine disrupting potential.

The Environment ministry has invited cosmetic companies to submit applications for substitutes including packaging that can reduce the need for preservatives.

For instance, a metering pump can reduce the decrease of air to the container, which in turn ensures that the product is safe and not contaminated by the user’s fingers.

Adjustments in water activity, pH value and use of multi-functional ingredients, which have some level of antimicrobial action, can be considered in the production and formulation of the cosmetic products.
