Sun protection leads Suncare market in France: Report

French people accord more preference to sun protection products over the other modes to protect themselves from scorching heat, finds a new survey by UK-based research firm Canadean – Health & Beauty.

According to the report ‘Consumer Trends in the Suncare Market in France, 2011’, sun protection forms close to 50% of the market value share, followed by self-tan products at about 30% and after-sun at 20%.

All these three segments of the France suncare market have held a similar share, even in volume terms, observed the survey.

Canadean’s analysis has also noted that the changing age structures emerged as the major trend driving the French consumers towards suncare in 2011. The consumption pattern in the country’s overall and segment-wise suncare market has had a huge influence of this trend during the year.

Among the various age groups, older consumers and kids & babies, together have accounted for more than 43% share, with the former holding 28% and the latter 15.5%. All the remaining groups, falling between these two have shared the remaining market.

With urban-rural divide of 75% and 25%, the France suncare industry has witnessed a marginal lead of men in 2011 over women in market value. Affluent people in the country have held a significant 44% share during the year.

Interestingly, both time poor and time rich French consumers, with 38% and 30% have turned out to be the leading groups in the country’s suncare market, while the upper secondary and post secondary students of France have together captured more than 50% of the market.

In 2011, private label suncare products could not make their way into the market, with all the segments managing just around 3% each.

The survey further provides retailer volume share in suncare and analyses the matrix of switching retailer behavior in the last half of 2011.
