Omega-3 fatty acids improve acne severity: Study

Omega-3 fatty acids improve acne severity, like the ones found in Omega XL, improve acne severity in males, especially in those who suffer from moderate to severe acne, according to a study.

Researchers belonging to California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California, studied the effects of omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in Omega XL, on healthy males ages 18-40 with mild to severe acne (acne vulgaris).

According to statistical data, the overall acne occurrence rate seems to be on the rise in Westernised countries, while it is a rare condition in non-Westernised countries with higher ratios of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids.

It was concluded by these researchers that because of the lower omega-3 content of the western diet, acne inflammation occurred.

In order to conclusively prove this, the researchers administered three omega-3 capsules daily for 12 weeks that contained a total of 930 mg EPA, 720 mg DHA, and 174 mg DPA per 3 capsules. Although participants were allowed to continue with their usual diets, they were told to not take in large amounts of additional omega-3 rich foods.

At the end of the trials after 12 weeks, it was found by the researchers that omega-3 supplementation is indeed associated with an improvement in overall acne severity, particularly for those with moderate and severe acne.

According to the researchers, Omega XL is one of only two Omega-3 supplements sold in the world that contains the patented stabilised marine lipid extract PCSO-524, which is derived only from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, with 30 healthy fatty acids including DHA and EPA.

It is sold in other parts of the world under the brand name Lyprinol, and is manufactured exclusively by Great HealthWorks.

It is also said to be the most widely available omega-3 fish oil supplement containing the potent PCSO-524 marine lipid extract.
