Changing age structures drive Brazil’s suncare market: Report

Changing age structures seems to be the driving factor for Brazilian suncare market, finds a new research by UK-based Canadean Health & Beauty.

According to the report ‘Consumer Trends in the Suncare Market in Brazil, 2011’, more than 44% of Brazilians have cited changing age structures as the most influencing trend on the overall consumption of their suncare products.

The same trend was witnessed even among the market categories – after-sun, self-tan and sun protection during the review year.

In terms of market value, sun protection has dominated the Brazilian suncare market with notable 60%, followed by self-tan products at 32% and after-sun at 8%.

Brazil has witnessed a similar trend even in volume terms, where sun protection touched 52.4%, while self-tan was pegged at 38.5% and after-sun at 9.04% in 2011.

Interestingly, people across all age groups had a moderate share in the suncare market, ranging from 11% by tweens & early teens to 17% by older young adults.

The market, which was mostly restricted to urban areas of Brazil, women showed a clear edge over men with more than 56% of the share.

Among the educated groups, undergraduates have had the leading share of about 32%, followed by upper secondary students at 25%.

‘Better off’ Brazilians have outpaced affluent fraternity by about 8% to emerge as the leading segment in the market, while both time rich and time poor individuals have gone hand in hand during 2011 with more than 29% share each.

The branded products in the suncare market of Brazil have nearly restricted the penetration of private label products in 2011. All the three segments represented the share of 98% and above from branded category.
