CDPH releases database of harmful cosmetics

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has introduced Safe Cosmetics Program Product Database, a searchable website to increase awareness among consumers regarding the safety of cosmetics.

This is reportedly the first of its kind wherein a state body has facilitated such information. All the information put on the site was obtained as per the existing California Safe Cosmetics Act (CSCA).

CDPH director Ron Chapman, who spoke on this development, has said that in case a product finds its place on this website, then it should be taken for granted that the product contained suspected carcinogen or other harmful elements.

He, however, said: "It does not mean that the cosmetic product itself has been shown to cause cancer, but since most products are not extensively tested for safety, providing information on chemical components will allow consumers to make more informed choices."

Nearly 475 companies have submitted data that covered over 30,000 products.

Some of the harmful chemicals that CDPH detected in them included mercury compounds, toluene, formaldehyde and miscellaneous toxicants.

On the other hand, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, an advocacy group based in USA, has hailed CPDH’s move.

Its co-founder Janet Nudelman said: "California’s database is one more tool for consumers to use to make safer choices about cosmetics. It will also keep the pressure on companies to reformulate products to remove chemicals linked to adverse health effects."
